It’s officially summer and temperatures are heating up! Though most people think the beach is the only way to cool off, those of us in Missouri know better. Check out this awesome list of places that offer an opportunity to splash around, float down, or dive into around the Fort Leonard Wood Region.
Happy Hollow is a relaxing area on Fort Leonard Wood for families. In addition to picnic facilities and a playground, families have fun wading in the river and splashing around to cool off. Though it’s a lot of fun in the summer, it’s a beautiful spot year-round. Plan to head back and check it out during the fall when the leaves are changing.
The cities of Waynesville & St. Robert offer great options to cool off! You’ll find a splash pad, which is great for all ages, at the Waynesville City Park and the City of St. Robert offers the Tiger Typhoon Aquatic Center. In addition to an indoor pool, you’ll also find an outdoor pool area with a lazy river, slides, and water features that kids of all ages will enjoy.
Lake of the Ozarks is a huge man-made lake located less than an hour from Fort Leonard Wood. You can head up for the day and enjoy the beaches or get away for the weekend and stay in a hotel, rent a condo or house on VRBO, or camp out at the Army’s MWR resort: Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area. Spending time at the lake is a great way to relax, stay cool, and enjoy some great food at a number of restaurants located around the whole lake.
If you’re looking for a spot to cool off that is a little less crowded and provides some more opportunities for exploration, check out Rocky Falls in Winona Township. The falls are located just south of Fort Leonard Wood and they’re part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, which include the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers. The rivers within this system are great for floating, canoeing, fishing, or swimming.
We highly recommend a family trip to Table Rock Lake while you’re in Missouri. You’ll find great beaches, exceptional fishing, and a great opportunity to float the day away on your pontoon. If your family needs a little adventure mixed in with their relaxation, you can head over to Branson, Missouri where you’ll find theater shows, a variety of restaurants and shopping, amusement parks like Silver Dollar City, and outdoor water parks.
Mark Twain National Forest located in the Fort Leonard Wood Region offers excellent opportunities for cooling off in the Current River. The Float Camp Recreation Area offers fishing, float trips, and swimming opportunities.
If you’re headed over to the Rolla area, check out The Fugitive Beach. Not only will you find a fun swimming hole, but there are concessions and additional beach activities for all ages. Make sure to bring some chairs, snacks, and drinks - and don’t forget lifejackets for the kids. Anyone under 10 is required to wear one.
