Whether you’re just itching to get out of town for a few days or you enjoy traveling and exploring new places, a quick flight to St. Louis could be just what you need!
We know that the St. Louis Cardinals are hosting their annual Military Appreciation Day game on August 15, so we thought we’d go ahead and put your itinerary together for you! Can’t make this particular game? That’s ok. This itinerary is great for any game day night spent in St. Louis! Let’s travel!
Grab your Cape Air ticket now and plan to head out of Fort Leonard Wood on our 7:30 a.m. flight and choose whatever return time you feel comfortable with for the next day.
Once you have that done, choose your hotel. There are tons to choose from, but we are particularly fond of the Chase Park Plaza Royal Sonesta hotel in the central west end neighborhood in St. Louis for a number of reasons, the first being that they often offer a military discount. The hotel is also located incredibly close to some great attractions, including Forest Park, where you’ll find the (FREE) St. Louis Zoo and a couple of great museums, and it’s close proximity to the Central West End Metrolink Station makes it super easy to get to from the airport (more on that later).
So, once you have those two things complete, you can simply follow our awesome day and a half itinerary for what we feel is one of America’s most awesome cities, St. Louis!
9 a.m. - Arrive at the St. Louis airport
9:30 a.m. - Head to the St. Louis Metrolink terminal station (you’ll be in terminal 1, so look for signs or ask someone at an information desk).
The cost for the trip from the airport to the Central West End station is approximately $2.50 per person, so make sure to purchase enough fare to get you to and from the airport.
9:36 a.m. - Grab the red line train (to Shiloh/Scott). The ride should last about 20-25 minutes and you’ll get off at the Central West End (CWE) station.
10 a.m. - From the CWE station, it’s about a 15 minute walk to the Chase Park Plaza hotel or if you’d rather save your feet, grab a ride from a ridesharing service over to the hotel.
10:15 a.m. - Though you probably can’t check into the hotel yet, stop by the front desk and ask if they can hold your bags while you explore the city.
10:30 a.m. - If you feel comfortable and enjoyed your Metrolink ride from the airport, the same red line train goes straight to the Gateway Arch. Simply head back to the station and grab the next train. Your other option is to grab a ride from a rideshare service or take a taxi.
The arch is just one of those iconic landmarks that you can’t miss if you’re in St. Louis. Feeling brave? Take the elevator all the way to the top! Don’t forget that military members receive a discount on tickets with their America the Beautiful pass.
12 p.m. - You’re probably getting a little hungry by now, so take a quick 10-15 minute walk to the Schlafly Tap Room for lunch.
2 p.m. - Take some time this afternoon to enjoy one of the many amazing museums St. Louis has to offer. From the Schlafly Tap House, the City Museum is only a 10 minute walk and the National Blues Museum is about a 25 minute walk. Both are rich with history and are a great way to enjoy an afternoon in St. Louis.
Depending on the time you spend in the recommended museums, you could always head to the ballpark early and enjoy the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame museum. Tickets are $8 for kids, $12 for adults, but they do offer a discounted ticket for seniors and military members ($10).
6 p.m. - Either head in early to check out team warm-ups and batting practice, or check out many of the restaurants and bars that are part of the ballpark. On Wednesdays, kids eat free at Cardinals Nation, so if you have kids in tow, this might be the perfect option.
7:15 p.m. - Game time! Enjoy tonight’s Cardinals game. When you need to stretch your legs, head over to the Budweiser Terrace!
10 p.m. - After a very full day, take the easy, safe way back to your hotel by getting a ride with a rideshare service or taking a taxi.
Enjoy a nice breakfast at the Chase Park Plaza or venture out to a great neighborhood restaurant. We’ve heard Kingside Diner is great, but you could also ask at the front desk for a good recommendation.
9:30 a.m. - Check out of the hotel, but ask if the front desk minds holding your bags again while you do a little more exploring.
9:45 a.m. - Take some time to enjoy a nice walk through Forest Park and if you aren’t completely worn out yet, take some time to walk through the St. Louis Museum of Art or the Missouri History Museum. Both are located in Forest Park.
Noon - Grab a quick lunch somewhere in the neighborhood and then swing by the hotel to grab your bags.
12:45 - Head back to the Central West End station and take the red line train back to Lambert Airport.
3:30 - Grab your Cape Air flight back to Fort Leonard Wood.
